advocate

someone who strongly and publicly supports
someone or something:

verb [transitive]
to affect the way someone thinks or behaves or
affect the way something happens:

disagreeing with someone:

motto

mottos

mottoes
) noun [count]
a short statement that expresses something such as
a principle or aim, often used as a statement of
belief by an organization or individual:
Never give up! That’s my motto!
beatnik
noun [count]
a young person in the late 1950s and early 1960s
who did not accept the usual ideas and rules of
society and who dressed and behaved in a different
way from other people in order to emphasize this.
prose
noun [uncount]
written language in its ordinary form, as opposed
to poetry:
She writes beautiful prose.
dialect
noun [count or uncount]
a way of speaking a language that is used only in a
particular area or by a particular group
rebel
verb [intransitive]
to oppose someone in authority or oppose accepted
ways of doing things:
It’s natural for teenagers to rebel.
rebel against

Liberal parents often leave their

disillusioned
adjective
disappointed because you have discovered that
someone or something is not as good as you had
believed:
Disillusioned communists helped bring down the
regime.
recognition

praise, respect, or admiration:

to do something or happen in a way that is not
planned:
The talk drifted towards the subject of money.
relate to something/someone
to be able to understand a situation or the way
someone feels and thinks:
The programme deals with scientific subjects that
ordinary people can relate to.
endure
verb [transitive]
to suffer something unpleasant or difficult in a
patient way over a long period:
He endured torture for months at a time.
spontaneous
adjective
happening in a natural way without being planned
or thought about:
spontaneous applause/cheers
fall out with
phrasal verb
to stop being friendly with someone because you
have had a disagreement with them:
I’d fallen out with my parents.
figurehead
noun [count]
a leader who has no real power or influence,
especially a leader of a political party
stint
noun [count]
a period of time spent doing something:
He came to California after a brief stint as a
waiter in New York.
hippie
noun [count]
someone in the 1960s who was opposed to war and
the traditional attitudes of society, and who showed
this by having long hair and wearing very informal
clothes
stream
noun [count]
a continuous flow of people or things:
He was great company with his endless stream of
stories

streetwise
adjective
able to deal with difficult or dangerous situations
that you often find in cities.
immigrant
noun [count]
someone who comes to live in a country from
another country:
There has been a rise in the number of illegal
immigrants.
