TheMassoretico-CriticaleditionoftheHebrewBibleisbasedonthe
ReceivedText(TextusReceptus),namelythatoftheSecondRabbinic
BiblepreparedbyJacobbenChayimin1524–25whichwasfaithfully
preservedbyDrChristianDavidGinsburgandpublishedin1894bythe
TrinitarianBibleSocietyinLondon.Boththetextandthenumerous
footnotesfoundinGinsburg’sMajorandMinorEditionspublishedbythe
BritishandForeignBibleSocietyforitsCentenarywerealsoextensively
usedinthepreparationofthisvolume.
Themainfeaturesofthiseditionareasfollows:

Novariations,howeverstronglysupportedbytheHebrewmanu-
scriptsandprintededitionshavebeenintroducedintothetextbut
wererelegatedtothemarginsandthefootnotes.

Thefootnotescontainimportantinformationaboutthetextual
variantsandfactsfromtheprintedMassorahpreservedfromperdi-
tionbyJacobbenChayimandDr.Ginsburg.Thetotalnumberof
footnotesinthisrevisionis4503.
•
ThisisaverytraditionalancientMassoretictext,whichunder-
standsandabidesbythestrictrulesoftransmittingtheHebrew
Scripturesdownthroughthecenturies.Thus,featuresincludethe
correctdisplayofclosedandopensections,sedarim,parashiyot,
largeandsmallletters,dottedletters,invertednun,thecorrect
useofRapheandtheaccents,theMassoreticsummariesassociated
withtheparashiyotandbooksoftheTorah,etc.
•
Whilethemoderndivisionsofchaptersandversesarenotedforthe
sakeofconvenientreference,thetextisarrangedaccordingtothe
ancientchaptersandsectionaldivisionsoftheMassorahandthe
MSS.,whicharethusrestored.
•
Massoreticsummariesattheendofeachbookareforthefirsttime
(inaHebrewBibleeditionasfarasIknow)givenwiththeirEnglish
translations.
•
WeuniformlyreproducetheDageshedandRaphedletters,which
arefoundinallthebestMassoreticManuscripts,butwhichhave
beenomittedinallthecurrentprintededitionsoftheHebrewBible.
•
TheancientMassoreticchapters,calledSedarim,arealsoindicated
inthemarginsagainsttheirrespectiveplaces.
•
IntheMassoreticsummariesforindividualparashiyotoftheTorah
thesignsfoundinJacobbenChayim’sSecondRabbinicBible1524–
25(firstprintedHebrewBiblewiththeMassorah)aregiveninad-
ditiontothestandardsignsusuallyfoundinthestandardCodices.
