The Photography Handbook
provides an introduction to the principles of photographic
practice and theory and offers guidelines for the systematic study of photographic
media. It explores the history of lens-based picture-making and examines the medium’s
characteristics, scope and limitations.
The book equips the reader with the vocabulary for photographic phenomena and helps
to develop visual awareness and visual literacy. It will enable students to familiarise
themselves with current theoretical viewpoints and to evolve critical frameworks for
their own photographic practice.
The Photography Handbook
introduces practical photography as a series of processes
from pre-production through to post-production editing. Terence Wright discusses such
topics as choice of camera format, camera angle, aperture, development, captions and
editing contact sheets. He analyses photographic theory so that the photographer is able
to make an informed and efficient use of the medium to deliver the desired image,
while reflecting on the social and cultural environment and the temporal and spatial
location.
The Photography Handbook
includes:
• the historical background and rationale for photographic representation
• an introduction to conceptual skills necessary for photography
• information on the camera as a documentary tool
• interviews with editors, photographers and picture editors
• text on the effect of new technologies on photographic practice and an exploration
of the shift from analog to digital imagery.
Terence Wright
spent ten years as a photographer. He taught at the National Film and
Television School and was Reader in Media Arts at the University of Luton. He is
currently visiting Research Fellow at Queen Elizabeth House and Associate Fellow of
the Reuter Programme at Oxford University.
